Choose your word of the year for 2021!

Time to talk Word of the Year

I’m so excited to introduce to you my favorite way to start a new year and I’m going to detail exactly how you can choose your word here!  2020 has been a whirlwind for many, myself included.  I’ve officially launched my own business and while scary, it’s been so exciting!  Thank you so much to everyone that has been there while I’ve been in launch mode!

One thing I’ve done over the last few years, is choose and plan what my “word of the year” should be for the next year.  I did not come up with the idea of choosing a word instead of a resolution – man I wish I could take credit for that.  I’ve followed many bloggers who give great details and have taught me over the years. But what I don’t see a lot of is choosing a word of the year to set goals for your businesses or career.  With 2020 coming to a close in the next few weeks (finally right), it’s time for me to pick my “word” for 2021.  I choose a word to live by rather than a resolution to try to keep.  Let’s be honest, how many people break their resolutions within the first few weeks of the year?

If you’re interested in choosing a word for 2021 rather than a resolution keep reading!  While I’m going through the motions of choosing my word, I’m documenting my process for you to do the same.  I’d also love to hear what your word is and why if you’d like to share!  Let me know if this has been helpful for you.

Why choose a word instead of a resolution?

Why choose that word of the year instead of a resolution?  I’ve been choosing a word for about the last 4 years and by the end of the year I really found that I’ve actually stuck to it instead of dropping it within the first few months.  For 2020 my word was “Progress.”  I had no idea that by the end of the year I would actually be fairly successful with that word – having no idea the struggles I was going to face for the year.  We all know that ugly term for 2020 – COVID.  I “progressed” forward and leaped into starting my own business and stopped doing everything for free.  I “progressed” forward and continued on my weight loss journey losing over 70lbs (so far) this year!  I “progressed” through an unexpected pandemic virtually teaching a 7 & 9 year old, working full time, starting my business and keeping my head above water with family.  What an adventure this year has been!  In all the negativity that is surrounding us small businesses (or life in general) I can take a look back and be proud of myself for my accomplishments.

Let’s talk goals and get to work!

So let’s get started.  Get yourself a pad of paper or open up a notes tab on your phone or computer.  Start thinking of what you want to focus on for 2021.  I’m going to focus this on setting a business related “word,” but you can absolutely use this same process to choose a “word” that is all encompassing for work and home.  Those words could match, but they could be totally different as well and that’s ok!  You can even choose 2 if they are completely different.

Go through the classic Who, What, When, Where and Why.  First, think of some of the goals you want to accomplish over the next year.  You might break it down like this…Who is your main focus for 2021? Who do you want to reach as a customer base? What do you need to do to reach that new customer? When do you want to reach that new customer? Where are those new customers? Why this new customer?

Are your goals SMART goals?  I’m taking this back to my college days but if you don’t know what a SMART goal is, it is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time Based.  A goal of I want to lose weight is not considered a SMART goal.  I will lose 20lbs in 2021 is better but still not great.  How will you lose 20lbs?  How about I will go to the gym 3 days per week in 2021 to lose 20lbs for the year.  Better, right?  How else could you achieve it?  Meal planning?  Join a gym?  Find a specific new way of eating?  You can also break down your large SMART goals into smaller goals to help you achieve that bigger goal. Let’s turn that to business. “I will gain 200 new followers on my social media by December 31, 2021.”

All of the above really brings you more towards a resolution right?  Not necessarily.  We’re going focus those goals and break them down in the next section!

Time to break it down!

Next, let’s take that smart goal and break out specific key words that bring you towards that goal.  If you have a few goals, write down descriptive, focused words.  Start writing or typing those thoughts making sure to use descriptive words; no matter how big or small this is going to help you in the process of choosing your word.  Are you starting to see a common theme between your focus(es)?  What is motivational in the descriptive words you’ve written down?  Now look at your words.  Do you see a lot of nouns (customer, workplace, employees, family, time, social media, etc.)?  Let’s try to remove the focus of nouns and focus more on adjectives (profitable, healthy, happy, successful, grateful, blessed) or verbs (gain, focus, renew, soar, balance, progress).  What can you take action on that will motivate you towards success for the following year?  What verbs or adjectives do you want to see from your nouns?  Personally, I find a verb to be the best choice for me, but you have to choose what works for you too.

If you have a business partner, you can ask them to do this activity with you and try to come up with a word together.  Or, you can do the activity separate and watch your goals soar!  My only recommendation to you would be to make sure your words align together so you are not on completely different focuses of where you see your business going over the next year.

Don’t stress!

You absolutely can choose to have more than one word for the year but if this is your first time, really try to focus your goals and see if you can come up with just 1.  It doesn’t have to be done today or tomorrow but don’t lose the focus.  You do not have a deadline of January 1 to put this word in place.  Take your time and find something you know you can stick with.  You’re going to benefit from the choice no matter what day you make that choice.  Also if something changes partway through the year, there is no one telling you that you can’t change the word as the world around you changes. Don’t give up on it either. Goals can and should be tough to obtain – use those easy goals to reach your main goal for the year.

What do I do with the word once I choose it?

What do you do with the word once you’ve chosen it?  I can tell you what I do – I plaster it everywhere!  Anyplace appropriate that I see consistently.  A constant reminder to not forget.  When you forget, you drop it, right?

Some of you may know I’m also a consultant with Thirty-One Gifts.  In the past we’ve had bracelets where we could monogram a word or saying on that bracelet.  Unfortunately the bracelets aren’t available as of today, but if they become available, I will update this to include a link.  I wear that bracelet every single day as a reminder to myself to not forget my word.  There are many Etsy shops (yay, support small businesses) where you can order a bracelet for yourself to have a bracelet every day too!  Unless Thirty-One comes back with them soon, I’ll find a great Etsy owner and have one made. When I do, I’ll come update you all with my findings!

Create a vision board!  They’re so fun and relaxing to make.  Just cut up some old magazines or print out photos with your word and even some pictures of where you want your word to take you for the year.  Plaster them all over a piece of heavy cardstock or poster board.  Hang it up in your office or somewhere you’ll see it every day.

If you use a good ole paper planner, put it at the top of every week or month as a daily reminder.  Take it to the next level and put some of those smart goals in your planner too.  If you have something date specific, a planner is a great place to put your goals!

Create a digital photo collage and use it as your home screen on your computer, phone or tablet.  Use your word and place photos behind it of things that help define that goal.  I love Canva to make collages or fun photos.  They have a great free option!

Promote it on your social!  Use it as a hashtag and maybe find others that have that same word for the year.  You can also find great inspirational photos by searching it as a hashtag.  Use that photo you created for your home screens and put it on your social too.

If you journal, journal all about that word.  Not just once, go back to it and fill in the wins you have from reaching that goal as you reach them!

Oh gosh there are so many ways you can make this word a decorative reminder of your goals for the year!  What are your ideas of word placement and uses?

Yessss, you’ve got this!

There are many unknowns for the upcoming year.  You’ve got this!!  Take your focus on what you can control.  What can you do for your business or even yourself to make 2021 even better than 2020?  We all have it in us and I’m hoping this gives you the ability to find what you can do to keep moving forward for the upcoming year.  Always remember that you matter and you can make a difference!  Your success is in your hands and I hope you all have a prosperous 2021!  Thank you for taking the time to be with me for this and I really look forward to your questions and comments!  Feel free to share this if you found it inspiring or helpful at all.  I hope I can help others succeed in 2021!  If you’re comfortable, let me know what your word for 2021 is and if it’s personal, business related or both!

Much love & success,

Kim

How to Master the 1-1 Follow-Up

(Without Making It All About You)

So, you’ve done the work, you’ve attended the right events, and you’ve met someone who could be an amazing connection. Now it’s time for the 1-1 follow-up – that critical moment where you both get to learn more about each other and see if you’re truly aligned. But here’s a heads-up: a 1-1 isn’t about pitching yourself; it’s about building trust, creating a foundation, and keeping things balanced. This meeting is where your initial connection can turn into a lasting relationship—but only if you approach it the right way.

If you’re not sure how to make the most of these 1-1 meetings, here are some key strategies that will help you build genuine connections without it feeling like a sales call.

Show Interest, Don’t Sell

Imagine you’re sitting down with someone, and before you can say “hello,” they’re explaining why you need their service. Not the best vibe, right? Approach the conversation with genuine curiosity about who they are and what they value. Treat it as an opportunity to learn and connect, not as an invitation to pitch. Remember: the best relationships grow from shared values and interests, not from a hard sell.

Pause, Listen, and Avoid Story Jumping

One of the best ways to show you’re interested is to pause and let them talk. Avoid the urge to “story jump” (where you immediately follow their story with one of your own). Listening is key to uncovering areas of potential collaboration and shows that you’re genuinely invested in what they’re sharing. Plus, taking a moment to pause before responding can help you stay focused on their story rather than steering the conversation back to yourself.

Ask Thoughtful Questions to Build Trust and Encourage Collaboration

Go beyond the basics with questions that reveal their priorities and personality. Here are some examples:

  • What’s something in your business you’re incredibly proud of but don’t get to talk about often?
  • If you could solve one challenge in your industry overnight, what would it be?
  • Who or what inspired you to start your business?
  • What’s a non-work goal you’re working on right now?

These questions allow for real connection and mutual understanding, which lays the groundwork for future collaboration. The goal is to get to know them as a person, not just a professional.

Share, Don’t Sell

Yes, there’s a time to talk about what you do, but let it flow naturally. Think of it as sharing a success story or passion project, almost like your own mini testimonial. “I love helping small businesses boost their visibility,” sounds way better than “I can help you double your client list by Q4.” It’s subtle, it’s genuine, and it keeps the focus on mutual interest rather than an agenda.

Respect Their Time and Keep the Balance

Everyone’s busy, so be respectful of their time. If you’re close to the scheduled end and the conversation is going well, ask if they’d be open to a follow-up. This shows that you value their time and creates a natural opportunity to meet again without overstaying your welcome.

And if the meeting isn’t going well or feels one-sided, it’s okay to politely wrap things up rather than staying longer. Closing with something like, “This has been great! Let’s stay in touch and see if any opportunities come up for us to collaborate in the future,” keeps the door open without forcing a continued connection.

Take Notes (and Let Them Know You’re Doing It)

Taking notes during the meeting is a great way to show that you’re engaged without interrupting. Let them know you’re jotting down details so you don’t forget anything, and it’s clear you’re listening closely to what they’re saying. This helps you remember key insights and gives you a foundation for thoughtful follow-ups.

Pro Tip: If you receive their business card, write a few memorable details on the back, like a unique comment they made or a shared interest. This small step makes follow-up conversations much smoother.

Networking in the Right Places:

Finding Your Ideal Clients & Collaboration Matches

Networking is powerful—but only if you’re connecting with the right people. Showing up to every event or taking every meeting isn’t the answer; the real magic happens when you’re intentional about where you spend your time and who you engage with. The goal isn’t to meet everyone—it’s to meet the people who align with your values, goals, and, most importantly, your ideal client or collaboration match. And if your goal is to increase your brand awareness by meeting as many people as possible, that’s okay too! Just remember that meaningful business relationships often lead to the best opportunities.

So, how do you ensure you’re networking in the right places? Let’s look at a few strategies that will help you maximize your networking time and set you up for connections that can lead to powerful opportunities.

Define Your Ideal Client & Collaboration Partner

Before you even start searching for events or setting up meetings, get crystal clear on who you’re looking for. If you can picture your ideal client or collaborator in detail, you’re more likely to find them.

  • Be Specific: Think about your dream (or moonshot) client or collaborator. Who are they? What are their values, interests, and business goals?
  • Understand their needs: What struggles do they have? What dreams are they working toward?
  • Accept that not everyone is your “IDEAL” client: Yes, you may technically be able to work with anyone with a heartbeat, but the best collaborations are those where there’s alignment in values and goals.

Choose Events That Align with Your Goals

Networking events come in all shapes and sizes. From industry-specific gatherings to casual meetups, there’s a variety to choose from. Here’s a quick list of some popular types:

  • Conferences and Trade Shows: Great for making industry connections, especially if you’re looking to connect on a broader scale.
  • BNI (Business Networking International) and Referral Groups: Structured groups focused on referrals and long-term business connections.
  • Gender or Industry-Focused Groups: Ideal if you’re looking to connect with people in your industry or demographic.
  • Meetups and Local Events: Smaller, casual events often focused on specific topics, industries, or activities.
  • Online Networking Opportunities: Virtual summits, webinars, and even social media groups can be excellent networking spaces.

Tip: Reach out to the event host or organizer if you’re unsure about an event. Ask them what the “vibe” is and what kind of attendees to expect—this can help you choose events where you’re likely to find people aligned with your goals.

Network with Intention

Going to an event with a purpose is key. When you’re intentional, you can focus on meeting people who genuinely align with your ideal client or collaboration partner.

  • Set specific goals for each event: Are you hoping to connect with potential clients, industry experts, or other entrepreneurs? Knowing this in advance can help you use your time wisely.
  • Show up as you want to be seen: Dress appropriately for the type of event, and ensure your online presence is up-to-date. Potential clients or collaborators might research you online before or after meeting you, so make sure your photos, bio, and recent work reflect who you are now.
  • It’s okay to skip certain events if they don’t align with your goals or ideal client profile. Remember, you’re here to connect with the right people.

Take Notes and Focus on Quality over Quantity

Networking isn’t a game of collecting as many business cards as possible. It’s about building relationships that will matter long after the event is over.

  • Take notes during the event: If you have a good conversation with someone, jot down a few key points about them. Write down something memorable they said or a unique detail about their business.
  • Use the back of their business card: This helps keep track of who they are and how you might be able to follow up meaningfully. When it comes time for a follow-up, these notes can make all the difference.

Remember, it’s the meaningful connections you form at these events that truly matter—not the number of business cards in your pocket.

Why wait to plan your 2024 in business? The end of the year is rapidly approaching – do yourself a favor and get that plan going for next year!

Do you wait until the day of your milestone birthday to plan your epic party? So why are you waiting until January to plan how you want to move forward in 2024? Hello, savvy business owners and professionals! If you’ve ever organized a fabulous celebration for a milestone birthday, you know that the key to success is careful planning well in advance. The same principle applies to your business and professional goals. Why wait until January to chart your course for 2024 when you could be laying the groundwork for success right now?

Setting the Tone: Your Word of the Year

One powerful way to kickstart your preparations for the coming year is by choosing a “Word of the Year.” This isn’t just a trend; it’s a meaningful strategy to set your intention and focus for the upcoming months. Whether it’s “innovation,” “growth,” or “resilience,” having a guiding word can keep you motivated and aligned with your goals. If you haven’t chosen your word yet, head over to my blog on this topic for some inspiration. I will also be hosting an in-person workshop with Connect Media Live, Zoom workshop (with VIP exclusive support) and will always offer 1-1 consultations – just contact me.

The Power of Networking Events

As a small business owner or professional, attending networking events should be a non-negotiable part of your routine. These gatherings provide a golden opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, potential clients, and collaborators. Networking can open doors to new ideas, partnerships, and even unexpected opportunities. So, mark your calendar, attend events, and don’t forget to follow up with those promising connections! I welcome you to join me at one of my upcoming networking events. Check out my Calendar of Events and sign up for one today!

Time Blocking: Your Productivity Superpower

Time is your most valuable asset, and effective time management is crucial for success. Start incorporating time-blocking into your daily routine. Allocate specific blocks of time for essential tasks, meetings, and strategic planning. This method not only enhances productivity but also ensures that you’re dedicating time to both short-term tasks and long-term goals. If you already have your entire day’s time blocked, have you scheduled yourself “me” time? When it comes to productivity, it is just as important to give yourself permission and TIME to step away from the computer, schedule, or other commitment and take time for yourself. Have you ever heard the saying, “You can’t pour from an empty cup?” It’s so true, and if you aren’t giving yourself time in 2023 – MAKE time for YOU in 2024!

If you have tips on time-blocking (for business or yourself) please share them in the comments!

Fueling Your Mind: Dive into Business Books

Knowledge is power, and one of the best ways to gain insights is through reading. Share your favorite business books in the comments below, and let’s create a collective library of inspiration. Whether it’s a classic like “Good to Great” by Jim Collins or a recent release that’s caught your eye, reading business literature can provide valuable lessons and perspectives. I’m looking to rapidly expand my book collection in personal growth and business. Whether it’s a timeless classic or a hidden gem, I want to build an amazing library that will inspire growth and success. Honestly, in the past, I’ve mostly read fiction for pleasure, so it’s time to level up in business with books!

My personal collection is not grand, so if you are interested in contributing to my growing collection of books and knowledge, I would be extremely grateful! I cherish the experience of holding a book in hand, so I’m specifically looking for books in paperback or hardcover format. Let’s build a tangible library of wisdom!

**How You Can Contribute:**
1. Comment below with the title and author of your must-read business book.
2. Feel free to share a brief insight into why this book impacted you or your business.
3. Take it one step forward and send me a physical copy of a book collecting dust on your shelf that you no longer need in your library.

As a token of my gratitude, I’m committed to paying it forward! For every duplicate book I already have, I’ll be gifting a copy to fellow members of our community. Let’s create a ripple effect of knowledge and growth together!

Price Your Success: Set Pricing Structures for 2024

Ok, so I’m totally guilty of this myself. I undervalue my worth, and I’m changing things for 2024. My time is just as valuable as the product or service I provide for my clients. Over the years, I have not valued my “time” as an asset, but it absolutely is! Don’t wait until the last minute to review and revise your pricing strategy. Setting a clear and competitive pricing structure for 2024 is essential for financial success. Consider factors like market trends, value propositions, and your business goals. Remember, pricing is not only about covering costs but also positioning your brand effectively in the market.

Action Plan: Your Roadmap to 2024

Now that we’ve outlined these key areas for success, it’s time to create your personalized action plan. Break down your goals into manageable steps, assign deadlines, and track your progress regularly. Waiting until January to plan is like waiting until the last minute to organize a big event – it adds unnecessary stress and reduces the likelihood of success.

So, are you still going to wait to plan 2024? What does your roadmap look like to avoid a stressful January 2024? If you haven’t, start planning your epic journey into 2024 today. Choose your Word of the Year, attend networking events, master time blocking, read and share business books, set your pricing structure, and craft a detailed action plan. Your success story begins now!

Join the conversation by sharing your Word of the Year, favorite business books, and tips for time-blocking in the comments below. Let’s inspire each other to make 2024 our most successful year yet!

As summer approaches, small business owners are often tempted to take a break from their normal routines and stop going to networking events. But this can be a chance for growth and progress that is lost. Does your business stop just because summer rolled around? Most cases the answer is no. In this blog post, we’ll talk about five good reasons why small business owners shouldn’t stop going to networking events during the summer.

Expand Your Professional Network:

Networking events are great places for company owners and representatives to meet potential clients and other professionals. These gatherings continue to draw a wide variety of businesspeople even in the warmer months. You can meet new clients, partners, suppliers, and industry experts by attending these events during this time. Keep in mind that networking is not just about making sales; it’s also about establishing meaningful connections that might help your company succeed in the long run.

Stay Informed about Industry Trends:

Keep up with the latest developments in your field even though it may seem that business slows down during the summer, many fields continue to operate year-round. You may learn about what’s happening in your industry right now by going to networking events. During these gatherings, a wide variety of groups and trade associations present educational panels and workshops. You can learn about new technologies and the shifting wants of your target market if you take an active role in them.

Discover New Opportunities:

The best way to find out about new opportunities is to attend networking events. Chance meetings and casual chats between like-minded professionals can lead to fruitful collaborations, partnerships, and joint ventures. You can find fruitful partnerships that can aid your company’s expansion by attending networking events this summer. Keep your eyes and ears open, as the most beneficial collaborations can arise from the most unlikely of encounters.

Enhance Your Brand Visibility:

Raise Awareness of Your Brand It is essential for a small business to have a prominent brand presence. One of the best ways to raise your company’s profile is to participate in networking events this summer. Create buzz and interact with guests by being present on social media before, during, and after the events. Speaking at or moderating these events can further establish you as a thought leader in your field. The more people who see you, the higher the likelihood that they will buy from you.

Gain Inspiration and Motivation:

The ups and downs of running a small business might leave you feeling isolated and in need of inspiration. You can meet other business owners who may have encountered and overcame similar challenges by attending networking events. The act of telling one’s story to another can serve as a powerful catalyst for change. These gatherings have a more mellow vibe in the summer, making it a great time to recharge your batteries and get some new ideas. It’s possible that when you get back to work, you’ll be full of energy and fresh ideas.

Networking Tips for Introverts

Nervous to attend a networking meeting on your own? I understand completely. For some, networking is intimidating to attend alone, give yourself a pep talk (many feel exactly like you do). Maybe try some of the tips below to help make the experience as comfortable for you as possible:

  • Invite a friend or coworker to lessen the fear of walking in alone.
  • If possible research registered attendees to feel you know a little bit about them prior to the engagement.
  • Be prepared to be a good listener to focus on what you can do for your new contact(s).
  • Be yourself, smile and provide open body language that shows you are approachable.
  • To continue to build your relationship, follow up with your new contacts via phone call, email, LinkedIn, etc.

Networking can be very intimidating, especially for introverts. Going in with a mindset of building relationships (not gaining an instant sale) will be a key approach to networking success.

I look forward to meeting you at an upcoming event soon!

Best,

Embracing #CollaborationNotCompetition: The Power of Working Together for Small Businesses and Start-ups

I say it and I say it often and I also use it in my daily habits for my business…collaboration not competition You’ll see me use the hashtag #CollaborationNotCompetition on most things that I post. It’s important to me, I believe in it, I strive for it and I live by the motto.

Business can be extremely cutthroat. But does it have to be? No, it does not in my opinion. Yes, it’s my opinion but I’m consistently searching for ways to work with others instead of competing with others. I’d love to share these ideas with whoever is interested in learning on owning this same mindset. Honestly it’s my goal to get as many people to think and work this way. Are you in?

In a world that often emphasizes cutthroat competition, the concept of collaboration might seem counterintuitive. However, for small business owners and start-ups, embracing collaboration over competition can be a game-changer. The hashtag #CollaborationNotCompetition beautifully encapsulates this ethos, reminding us that there’s immense value in joining forces with other businesses rather than trying to outdo them. In this blog, we’ll delve into why collaboration should be the cornerstone of success for small business owners and start-ups, especially when they bring diverse skills and expertise to the table.

  1. Pooling Diverse Expertise

Small businesses and start-ups often specialize in a particular niche. While this focused expertise is valuable, it can limit their capabilities in other areas. Collaborating with another business that excels in the areas where you may be lacking can create a synergy that benefits both sides. For instance, if you specialize in social media marketing and event planning, teaming up with a company skilled in graphic design or content creation can elevate the quality of your services. This collaborative approach expands your service offerings without the need for substantial investments in acquiring new skills.

  1. Expanding Reach and Audience

One of the most significant advantages of collaboration is the potential to tap into each other’s customer base. Each business brings its own loyal customers and followers to the table, introducing your brand to a wider audience. This cross-promotion not only boosts brand visibility but also adds credibility. When a reputable business vouches for your services, it builds trust among potential customers, making them more likely to engage with your offerings.

  1. Innovation through Shared Ideas

When minds from different backgrounds come together, the result is often a melting pot of innovative ideas. Collaborating with another business exposes you to fresh perspectives and approaches that you might not have considered. Brainstorming sessions become more dynamic, sparking creativity and leading to novel solutions. This is particularly beneficial for start-ups aiming to disrupt the market with unique offerings. The shared insights from collaborators can help refine your business model and strategies.

  1. Reducing Costs and Risk

Starting and running a business involves financial risks. Collaborative efforts can help mitigate some of these risks. Shared resources, such as office spaces, equipment, or marketing efforts, can significantly cut costs for both parties. Additionally, entering new markets or launching new products becomes less daunting when the risks are distributed between collaborators. This is particularly crucial for small businesses and start-ups that might have limited financial reserves.

  1. Learning and Skill Development

Collaborating with another business means a continuous exchange of knowledge. You learn from each other’s successes and mistakes, gaining insights that can accelerate your growth. This learning extends beyond business strategies – it can encompass new tools, technologies, and ways of thinking. For small business owners and start-ups, who often wear multiple hats, this learning aspect can be invaluable in expanding skill sets and improving overall business acumen.

  1. Building a Supportive Community

The journey of entrepreneurship can be lonely and challenging. Collaborating with like-minded businesses creates a sense of camaraderie and support. You’re not just gaining a partner in business; you’re gaining a friend who understands the struggles and triumphs of your entrepreneurial journey. This community aspect can provide emotional sustenance during tough times and amplify the celebration of successes.

The hashtag #CollaborationNotCompetition encapsulates a mindset that can transform the trajectory of small businesses and start-ups. By embracing collaboration, entrepreneurs can harness diverse expertise, expand their reach, foster innovation, reduce costs, accelerate learning, and build a supportive community. Remember, success is not always about outdoing others; it’s often about working together to achieve collective greatness. So, the next time you’re pondering how to take your business to the next level, consider the power of collaboration – it might just be the key to unlocking unparalleled success.

2023 Word of the Year - Goal Setting

Word of the Year for 2023

Do you choose a word of the year? Learn how I choose my word of the year, set SMART goals and what I do with the word once I choose it.

Word of the Year for 2023 Read More »

I talk about this all year long, but every year I like to focus one post on choosing your word of the year and it’s time for 2023! Oftentimes I follow the same flow to blogs of years past, but rather than having to go back and reread it let’s just get down to business here.

Please note, I take zero credit for coming up with the word of the year idea, rather I help educate others on the process of coming up with your word. So follow my process, or find someone else’s – either way I hope you choose a word for 2023 instead of a resolution!

Let’s start with breaking it down. First things first. Do you know what a word of the year is? Simply stated (in my own words) I use a “word” to set my intentions for the upcoming year. What word closely aligns with what I would like to see of myself every day for the upcoming year. It’s usually a combination of changes I want to make, mindset I want to set, actions I want to take, etc.

If you come across this blog, I’d love for you to tell me where you found me. I talk about my “Word of the Year” all over the place. You can find info on The Connect Show, Small Business Milwaukee, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google, etc.

Why I choose a word of the year instead of make a “resolution”…

How many of you set a New Year’s resolution? Does it work for you? How long have you stuck to that resolution? Last year I did some research for 2022’s blog and I found some interesting statistics. A HUGE majority of individuals that set that “resolution” drop it faster than they set it. Per the study I found from The Times News only 4% of survey respondents stuck to all of their new years goals and only 8% stuck to most of their goals. So why continue to set a resolution only to feel you let yourself down by the end of the year? Heck, even the end of January for some!

“Many years ago, I made a New Year’s resolution to never make New Year’s resolutions. Hell, it’s been the only resolution I’ve ever kept!” -D.S. Mixell

THAT quote above fits me to a T. Setting a “Word” instead of “Resolution” is more like setting an intention. You are constantly reminded (as you will read below) your “Word” and will be more intentional about following through with what you want to see for the upcoming year. Oftentimes with a resolution you want instant success and when you don’t see it, you drop it and move on with your life. When you set your intention for the life or the year, results will greatly differ!

I said this last year and I will repeat it…. I have felt success instead of failure ever since the day I ditched New Year’s Resolutions and started choosing a word instead. Did you read that? Success OVER Failure! Who wants to feel like they fail at anything? Why would we set ourselves up for that intentionally?

2022 my word for the year was “E.P.I.C.” Some would say I cheated a bit because this past year, my word was actually an acronym. My word stood for “Energetic, Positive, Influential and Collaborative.” I had a crazy year – crazier than most know or will know. Even through all of the craziness I worked 2022 always remembering my word. There were many unexpected barriers to “fail” at my word and I didn’t do it. Do you know why? When I set the word, it wasn’t a simple goal for me to follow – it was a way of life! One huge accomplishment was bringing back a networking event that’s been dormant since 2020, and I also created a brand new in-person networking event! Just the 2 networking events alone I believe I fully fulfilled my Word for 2022!

Did you choose a word for 2022? Do you feel like you achieved it? I’d love to hear in the comments what your word was and if you were successful in your choice!

set your goals and get to work!

What are your goals? Lose weight, change jobs, open a business, quit smoking, save money, etc? Get yourself a pad of paper or open up a notes tab on your phone or computer.  Start thinking of what you want to focus on for 2022. Just start writing or typing words that come directly to mind.

When I talk goals, I love to reference SMART goals. if you don’t know what a SMART goal is, it is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time Based. A goal of “I want to save money” misses the mark. I want to save $1200 is better, but still not time bound. A goal like “I want to save $1200 by December 31, 2023” follows the SMART goal measures. $1200 is specific and measurable, achievable (for this example) and is time bound by a specific date.

Can you have more than one SMART goal? Absolutely! I think it’s great to give yourself goals in different areas of your life such as work, school, family, health, etc. In previous blogs, I gave examples like “I will go to the gym 3 days per week in 2021 to lose 20lbs for the year” and for business “I will gain 200 new followers on my social media by December 31, 2021.”

In the next section we can break those SMART goals down into smaller parts to help define one word that can be all encompassing to fit your lifestyle for 2022.

Break it down and let’s find the word…

Get a list of words to inspire you here

Next, let’s take that smart goal and break out specific key words that bring you towards that goal. If you have a few goals, write down descriptive, focused words. How are you going to achieve that goal? Start writing or typing those thoughts making sure to use descriptive words; no matter how big or small this is going to help you in the process of choosing your word.

Are you starting to see a common theme between your focus(es)? What is motivational in the descriptive words you’ve written down? Looking at your words, do you see a lot of nouns (customer, workplace, employees, family, time, social media, etc.)? Let’s try to remove the focus of nouns and focus more on adjectives (profitable, healthy, happy, successful, grateful, blessed) or verbs (gain, focus, renew, soar, balance, progress). What can you take action on that will motivate you towards success for the following year? What verbs or adjectives do you want to see from your nouns? Personally, I find a verb to be the best choice for me, but you have to choose what works for you too.

Last year, like I said above, I broke some of my very own rules. Well kind of….

I like to find 1 solid word but I have a LOAD of goals for the upcoming year. So instead, I took 4 of those words (that kept showing up in my SMART goals) to make one acronym. So my word of the year? E.P.I.C. ENERGETIC – POSITIVE – INFLUENTIAL – COLLABORATIVE

My word was so “EPIC” last year, I’m having a hard time defining what I want to see out of 2023. But, I don’t want to beat myself up about the “what ifs” but also choose an amazing word that I can actually achieve. Yeah, 2022 was a great word, but 2023 will be just as good – just maybe not as memorable to others! I’m here to show you though, you can break the rules and do what works best for YOU! This is about you, not everyone else.

Now use the word EVERYWHERE

What do you do with the word once you’ve chosen it? I can tell you what I do – I plaster it everywhere! Anyplace appropriate that I see consistently. A constant reminder to not forget. When you forget, you drop it, right? Remember above… SUCCESS over FAILURE!

Wear it! In the past, I was a consultant with Thirty-One Gifts. For 6 years actually! In the past we’ve had bracelets where we could monogram a word or saying on that bracelet. Unfortunately the bracelets aren’t available as of today, but if they become available, I will update this to include a link with another consultant I could connect you to. When I ordered the bracelet, I wore it every single day as a reminder to myself to not forget my word.

If you have a date specific goal, a planner is a great place to plaster it !

Journal all about your smart goals. Continue to remind yourself and trust in yourself to reach those goals!

Oh gosh there are so many ways you can make your word a decorative reminder of your goals for the year! Draw it, write it, wear it, envision it and set your mindset to achieve it! What are your ideas of word placement and uses?

You’ve Got This!

Need some inspiration? Download my FREE list of words that might help you get started on your word journey! There are many unknowns for the upcoming year. You’ve got this!!  Take your focus on what you can control. What can you do for your business or even yourself to make 2023 even better than 2022? We all have it in us and I’m hoping this gives you the ability to find what you can do to keep moving forward for the upcoming year. Always remember that you matter and you can make a difference!

Your success is in your hands and I hope you all have a prosperous 2023!  Thank you for taking the time to be with me for this and I really look forward to your questions and comments!  Feel free to share this if you found it inspiring or helpful at all.  I hope I can help others succeed in the upcoming year!  If you’re comfortable, let me know what your word for 2023 is and if it’s personal, business related or both!

Much love & success,

Kim

I could not be more excited to announce I’m hosting 2 in-person networking events in Milwaukee starting next week Monday! Networking is so important for me to continue to thrive in business and personally. I’m elated to add a few new in-person options in Milwaukee County.

Business Over Breakfast

On Monday March 21, 2022 I’m kicking off a brand new networking group called Business Over Breakfast! I have wanted to do morning networking for a long time. Unfortunately most meetings start at 7:30am. I have the responsibility of getting 2 kiddos off to school so I can never seem to make that work. From conversations I’ve had with others, 7:30am is tough for many. So they say, when you can’t find an opportunity – create one!

Mondays can also be tough to get motivation for some. I’m looking forward to kicking the week off right, building relationships and meeting new people.

Business Over Breakfast is a FREE networking event directed to support business owners and professionals. Meetings are scheduled the 1st and 3rd Monday at 9am. We will meet at the Oak Creek Diner, 6874 South 13th Street, Oak Creek, WI 53154.

Professional Women of WI (PWoW)

On Tuesday March 22, 2022 we are bringing Professional Women of WI (PWoW) back to in-person after over 2 years of being virtual only!

PWoW is the very first networking group I attended long before I started Opportunity’s Knaaking. The group has been run for many years by Debbie Kuras. She has been an absolute inspiration to me in business and I’m honored to help keep this group alive! This group has been well established for over 10 years so I can’t wait to see familiar faces and meet new ones!

We are a group of women with a common interest in creating a network of formal and informal professionals. PWoW meetings are scheduled the 4th Tuesday monthly at 6pm. We will meet at The Brass Key Restaurant, 4952 W Forest Home Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53219.

What to Expect

Both of these events are free to attend. Meetings are held at restaurants and we ask each attendee to at least purchase a beverage or meal to help the restaurant for allowing us to meet there. Bring business cards to exchange, plan to meet and build relationships with new people.

We take a little different approach to networking than some others. We believe building relationships with each other is much more important than growing an email/contact list and business card collection. We consider these business AND social networking groups. Please take the time to get to know each member/attendee and make an effort to join as often as possible to network. Helping you grow your business and connect with the right people are priorities to us.

Networking Tips for 2022

  • Prepare your 30 second authentic “elevator pitch.” Be prepared to discuss what you do, but it’s important not to oversell yourself. Have fun with it!
  • Have your physical and digital business cards ready to share.
  • Prior to attending the networking event, set goals for yourself or have a plan of what you’d like to achieve during the event.
  • Ask creative questions to those you meet. Networking is more about building relationships than an instant sale. Keep that in mind when attending both virtually and in-person.
  • Focus on quality conversations over the quantity of conversations you have. It’s ok to not be able to talk to everyone.
  • If you are outgoing, find the “wall huggers” as it might be easier to have a one-on-one conversation rather than joining a conversation already in progress.

Networking Tips for Introverts

Nervous to attend a networking meeting on your own? I understand completely. For some, networking is intimidating to attend alone, give yourself a pep talk (many feel exactly like you do). I’m confident both groups will be welcoming to all who choose to join us.

I look forward to meeting you next week or over the months to come!

Best,

Kim Knaak

Word of the year for 2022

Word of the Year for 2022

Do you choose a word of the year? Learn how I choose my word of the year, set SMART goals and what I do with the word once I choose it.

Word of the Year for 2022 Read More »

I talk about this all year long, but every year I like to focus one post on choosing your word of the year and it’s time for 2022! The flow of this might be similar to last year’s blog but rather than having to go back and reread it let’s just get down to business here. I wish I could take credit for coming up with this idea, or saying I’m a master at choosing a word – truth is I’m not. What I can do is tell you the process I use to choose my “word.”

First, do you know what a word of the year is? Simply stated (in my own words) I use a “word” to set my intentions for the upcoming year. What word closely aligns with what I would like to see of myself every day for the upcoming year. It’s usually a combination of changes I want to make, mindset I want to set, actions I want to take, etc.

My intention is to always get this blog out within the first week of the year but you know what? Life happens and I say better late than never! The best part about setting a word of intention for the year is it doesn’t need to be done and set by January 1st! So let’s get to it…

Why I choose a word of the year instead of make a “resolution”…

Let’s be straight up. How many people set a resolution and actually stick to it for the entire year? If you have, congratulations – you are in the minority of statistics I could find! Per the study I found from The Times News only 4% of survey respondents stuck to all of their new years goals and only 8% stuck to most of their goals. So why continue to set a resolution only to feel you let yourself down by the end of the year? Heck, even the end of January for some!

I have felt success instead of failure ever since the day I ditched New Year’s Resolutions and started choosing a word instead. Did you read that? Success OVER Failure! Who wants to feel like they fail at anything? Why would we set ourselves up for that intentionally?

2021 my word for the year was “FORWARD.” As December came to a close, I felt great as throughout the entire year I can specifically acknowledge many things that I did to move forward with my life – both in business and personally. I turned the big 4-0; I took my very first trip to paradise (Caribbean); I quit my job and became a full-time entrepreneur; I networked my butt off; I met amazing business owners; I taught others; I learned from others and SO much more!

Did you choose a word for 2021? Do you feel like you achieved it? I’d love to hear in the comments what your word was and if you were successful in your choice!

set your goals and get to work!

What does a social media manager do when social media is down? Well well well. Most people know of the social media outage all….day…long. I’m sure someone has come up with a cool name for it. If you heard one – I’d love to hear it!

So what did I do today? As a social media manager, my job should be using social media all day, right? Not exactly! I have a lot of fun things that I do for my “job.” I used today as an opportunity to be creative. I have many tools I use for my client’s posts and none of those tools were down.

I took this opportunity to get my creative juices flowing. Social Media Managers don’t just sit on these pages all day every day. That’s what notifications are for ?. Thankfully, I do my work in blocks. Some would call it bulk. Basically I take a bunch of tasks and work on multiple things all at one time. It sounds mundane, but in the end it is SUCH a timesaver! If I have an image to put a logo on, I’ll do a bunch of images at one time instead of going back and forth. If I’m creating content, same thing I do a bunch at one time instead of going back and forth.

We talk a lot about bulk or block style working in the Social Media Class and Workshop Tracy Champage and I teach. Remember if you are interested in taking the class, you can get 1/2 off by taking this survey.

Canva

One of my favorite tools I use is an online design program called Canva. I do a lot of my graphics in this program. I create quotes specific for my clients, flyers, logos and more! There are a ton of free options available but I do pay a bit for seemingly limitless uses. Have you ever used Canva? What’s your favorite thing to make in the program?

So, today I did a lot of graphic work. It was fun and also gave me an opportunity to take time to be even more creative than normal. The best part? My clients are getting a little extra they didn’t pay for as an added gift from me. We’ll see if they notice over the next month of posts.

My Website

I also took some time to tend to my website which I don’t spend a lot of time on. Recently I created a new page that I use when networking. The page is simply called “Connect with Kim Knaak.” If you’ve ever heard of Linktr.ee, it’s similar to that. But this is a page I have complete control over and I’m loving it. I’m choosing how people connect with me and where.

From now on I’m going to use this for any new website I have. On platforms such as Instagram, you are only allowed to use one website link. This link is perfect for me as now I can add whatever I want to it – or what pertains to me at that time.

Oh and let’s talk websites for a second. This #SocialMediaOutage should have taught many business owners – if you don’t have a website, you NEED one! A website is really our only real estate on the internet. Make sure you are utilizing as many digital channels as you can afford (both time and money) but please, make sure a website is one of them!

You didn’t miss anything on social today!

So today I thought I’d also finish on my website and throw some words out to you all. Find the positivity when the unknown is thrown at you. Take the opportunities to be creative – whatever your creative might be. Some business owners freaked out with the loss of social today; I found plenty of other things to work on for my clients. Remember this, you didn’t miss anything on social today, because no one else was on it. How did you use today to be creative? What did you do during the social outage?

Thanks for taking the time to read about my day today. I hope you made yours amazing!

Best,

Kim

7.23.21 I made the decision to have my freedom day – retired; full-time milwaukee small business owner; forever unemployable by corporate America. I lovingly called it my retirement. I am now a full time small business owner! Don’t get me wrong, I did not leave my job on a bad note. I left with multiple offers for recommendations if needed in the future. There are definitely individuals I will miss dearly and functions of my job that I will miss as well. But… best of all, now is my chance to be a full time mom and work my business when it suits my time; not make time for my family based on my work schedule. What a joyous, scary, exciting, ambitious – really ALL the feelings moment!

Family Support to Be Home and Be Retired!

My husband Rick has been a tremendous support and my rock behind “retirement.” For months prior to my retirement he continued to tell me it would be ok. Quit my job. Be home with the kids. That all became a reality and I took his advice and took the leap on July 23rd. This was the last day of summer cool at the kid’s school. The decision was, pay nearly 1/2 my wages in daycare for the rest of the summer or be home with the kids and enjoy the rest of the summer with THEM. The choice was somewhat obvious, yet difficult. I have worked a steady job since I got a work permit almost immediately after turning 16. Never collecting unemployment, never without consistent income. It’s uncomfortable to wonder if the income will be consistent as a small business owner – not collecting a salary. I’m here for the uncomfortable moments and so thankful to have family by my side always supporting me!

business Support From My Amazing Network

I have the best network ever! The support, love, drive I get from others around me is nothing short of fantastic. I might not have the best words to describe those around me – but the feeling is just that – indescribable.

Tracy Champagne of Small Business Milwaukee took a huge chance on me. We work so well together. I am the Director of Membership services and the position is a perfect fit for me. I’ve been given such amazing opportunities but one of the most memorable was presenting on behalf of Small Business Milwaukee to the deserving grant recipients at the Back2Business event at the Fiserv Forum TWO TIMES in March! Tracy and I continue to grow our working relationship and our minds together for ideas are almost dangerous! Look out because we are having a blast and always creating new things!

Bill Sargent of Milwaukee Headshots has had my back from GO. He has done so much for me over the past year constantly encouraging me to do great things. You see that photo up there ????? That is compliments of Bill upon my “retirement.” I just adore him! And when there is an event, Bill is right there by my side ready to be my personal media photographer! Always available and willing! He has a saying that he is allergic to jobs and bosses. We joke that I’m now allergic too. Well, I was always allergic, I just finally found the cure to the allergy! Being in business for myself was the magic cure!

There is so much to say about those that have encouraged me to take this leap. I am not intentionally leaving anyone out but this would be one LONGGGG read if I kept going ?.

#CollaborationNOTCompetition

“If you’re not networking, you’re not working.” ~ Denis Waitley

I continue to consistently network. My mantra as I build my network is #CollaborationNOTCompetition. I believe in that to the fullest. I network with individuals with many backgrounds, businesses, etc. If I network with someone doing similar or the same business as me, in my mind I like to find out how we can work together, not compete against each other. My network is everything to me!

Are you networking? Let me know if you’d like more info on free networking groups I attend. I know it can be uncomfortable joining some groups for the first time by yourself so I’m happy to help encourage you and make you feel welcome by a new group. If you have an amazing group you network with – let me know so I might join you!

The Lunchroom – small business owners

We have a group that meets daily over Zoom called “The Lunchroom.” It’s not really business per say but the group formed from small business owners. During Covid stay at home orders we formed as a group go “get out to lunch” with others while being at home. We meet daily over “lunch” and everyone kind of comes and goes as they can. The relationships I have built with my new Zoom friends has been amazing! Who woulda thought you could find such great friends from a simple daily Zoom call?

Some of the consistent attendees who I proudly call friends – who have also been an amazing encouragement to my retirement include Debbie Kuras of SASI, Debbie & Jeff D’Agostino from Brent’s Carpet & Furniture Cleaning, Joanna Calrberg of Joanna’s Digital Images, Laura Van Schyndel Google Ads Specialist (I call her Laura Van Google and we lovingly call her “Google Girl”), Jenny McAdow with New York Life and a few other attendees who pop in and out when they can. I really cannot say enough about these new people in my life. Simply amazing and inspiring!

retired…Where do I go from here?

My word of the year is “Forward.” I will continue to move forward, try new things and be consistent with my work with my clients. I will continue my work with Small Business Milwaukee; I’ll continue to network and build relationships; I’ll continue to give tips for social media, digital consultations and create content to share. There is not a specific “plan.” Social media continues to change and I will change and try new things as they come up!

Is there something you would like to see from me going forward? I’m loving this journey and will continue to grow with you! I appreciate your comments, well wishes, advice, and more!
